BACKGROUND

Miele, based in Germany, has provided design-centric, high-end household appliances to people around the globe since 1899. They take the quality of build and functionality for every product they manufacture seriously – that’s one reason we were excited when Miele asked us to be part of defining future interactions and industrial design for some of their kitchen appliances.

CHALLENGES

Technology in the kitchen is nothing new, and there is no shortage of kitchen gadgetry available for burgeoning chefs. With a company like Miele, a significant challenge is to respect a distinct and premium brand, while ensuring they enable their user base with an enhanced cooking experience that takes advantage of emerging tech and UX opportunities.

Additional challenges
  • The cooking experience is laden with unique user expectations
  • “Digital” and service-minded thinking is relatively new to the home appliance industry
  • Production lead times ofmajor appliances is worlds away from the world of apps and services
INTEGRATED DESIGN STRATEGY

To address the wide variety of challenges, Topp presented a holistic design approach, providing a combined interaction and industrial design concept development process, tightly integrated with UX research and prototyping.

The benefits of this approach included:
  • A high bandwidth of physical & digital concepts to paint a rich picture of the potential experiences;
  • New opportunity identification and validation based on UX research;
  • High fidelity prototypes in simulated appliance form which could clearly communicate big picture ideas and elucidate the granular interactions which can make or break a design
